In designing this cartoon, Burne-Jones was recalling an illuminated Apocalypse (The Dragon and the Woman [f. 21r] Cloisters Apocalypse : Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York The Cloisters Collection, 1968 Accession Number: 68.174 ). From 1835 to c1895 it was owned by Dr. Louis-Maximien Rey, Bordeaux (1835–at least 1895, acquired as gift from a nun) and as yet it is unknown how Burne-Jones came to copy this image in the Wightwick Manor sketchbook NT 1288046.
