Burne-Jones began making book illustrations in 1861 for the brothers Dalziel on the recommendation of Holman Hunt and he produced a number of pieces of which this is the final example. Made during a period of activity as supplier of illustration for commercial publications, Burne-Jones and Morris became dissatisfied with the techniques employed as the translation of Burne-Jones's drawings was far from perfect with a loss of clarity. This stimulated an investigation into Renaissance book illustration which resulted in the projected Earthly Paradise woodcuts. Present location unknown.
