A design for one of fourteen panels - signs of the Zodiac and Day and Night, for the Green Dining room in the South Kensington museum. Commissioned by Sir Henry Cole, Richard Redgrave and Captain Francis Fowke in 1866. The decoration of the Green Dining Room at the South Kensington Museum (later the V&A) was one the first major public commissions for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. The company was set up by William Morris (1834–96) with a group of fellow artists and designers. This commission was for an important public building. It was therefore vital in establishing the reputation of the business. March is unique in that it displays a similarity with the artists specific technique for stained glass cartoons, whilst the rest of the series of drawings are more painterly, that being they are more suitable to be reproduced as a mural scheme. As such they are more like his preliminary drawing for his paintings.
