A head study from the same model that appears in the drawing that Burne-Jones gave to Ferdinand Knopff which is a study for the girl holding the helmet in The Arming and the Departure in the Holy Grail (Birmingham Museum and Art & Gallery) tapestries. This model was also used for the knight on horseback, far left without a helmet. Since Burne-Jones had used a female model he has given this knight a moustache to render him more masculine.
The other portraits of Kate Dolan, drawn in 1890, prove this work to be from that same session, using her as a model.
