The present work is a design for one of a pair of large lancets by Burne-Jones in the chancel apse at St. Cuthbert's, Melbourne Street, Newcastle. The second lancet is entitled Charity. Burne-Jones' account book notes 'Fortitude £20' under October 1896. The church of St. Cuthbert's has now been demolished and the windows are currently at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. Beneath Charity, Burne-Jones designed a panel of David lamenting; beneath Fortitude, David consoled. According to Giorgiana Burne-Jones' Memorials,1904, II, p.289 these panels were the first work to which Burne-Jones turned after the death of William Morris in 1896; they are reproduced in M. Harrison and W. Waters, Burne-Jones, 1973, pls.246-7. The grief that Burne-Jones felt at the death of his friend is reflected in his designs for these windows. Bonhams 2006
