One of a series of drawings made from a model, possibly Laura Lyttleton, in which the artist explores various psychologies of a face gazing intensely. The Queens in the painting are portrayed more passively, only the one at Arthur's feet would seem to be more emotionally engaged. The present drawing in the intensity of its gaze is closer too this Queen as is the inclination of the face. The painting, over it's long evolution developed subtle changes reflecting the artist's greater personal identification with the subject, as a consequence multiple studies were made in the various stages over the seventeen years of his engagement.
