This incomplete sketch of Perseus holding the monster's head is very similar to the final version of Perseus and the sea monster.
In one drawing (plate 2-31) Perseus grasps the decapitated monster which looks like a phallus. The sea monster in Burne-Jones's canvas is of indeterminate sex, but the legend specified that it was female: the hero thus regains the phallus siezed by the female'.
